Movie Review : Jagga Jasoos

Jagga Jasoos, the most unpredictable film of 2017, has finally made it’s way to the theatres. It stars none other than Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Saurabh Shukla in important roles. It’s not known whether the film is actually a children’s film or a family film. It does have that Disney feel to it which is why children are more interested in the film rather the young population. Will it hamper it’s box office prospects in the future? Or will this Ranbir-Katrina film fight against all odds to emerge the winner? Only time will tell.

The film is the story of Jagga, a young detective, played by Ranbir Kapoor. He is on the quest to find out his lost father. Many say that his father died in a car crash but he never believes. In this musical journey, he meets Shruti (Katrina Kaif) who teams up with him during this journey. Will he be able to find out about his father forms the rest of the story.

The film has been directed by Anurag Basu. While it is not known why film got delayed so much, we can definitely seen that lot has been done for specific detailing of the characters. The first half is entertaining and sets the stage. However, the second half drags a bit making it tiresome for the viewers to sit down for 2 hours and 42 minutes. The film could have easily been trimmed down by 15 minutes to get another half a star and more appeal to the audience. Overall, it’s not Anurag Basu’s best work but Jagga Jasoos is watchable.

Ranbir Kapoor plays Jagga and it is his career best performance till date. The role is more quintessential side which is worth seeing. However, he could not give his career best film with this one which was the need of the hour. Katrina Kaif has done a decent job. The chemistry between Ranbir and Katrina is enjoyable but it seems they’re not doing a together in the next few years. It might also turn out to be the last film together. The other supporting cast has done a respectable job and add value to the job.

A special mention has to be made for the cinematography. It instantly transports you to another world, like most of the Disney films. Songs are also decent but only a few of the songs work in the film.

Overall, the film is a one-time watch affair. Watch it for Ranbir Kapoor’s career best performance and Ranbir-Katrina’s probable last appearance on the silver screen. Had the film been trimmed by 15 minutes, it could have got 3 and a half stars. We have settled for 3 stars this time!

CHECK OUT THE BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS OF JAGGA JASOOS

COLLECTIONS

Jagga Jasoos has missed our predictions on Day 1 by about 2 Crores. We predicted that the film will collect 10.75 crores but the film just managed 8.5 crores in its final tally. The figure is not very low considering the genre, but it’s alarming as Jagga Jasoos is carrying a much higher budget that Barfi. 5 years back Barfi had released with 8.18 crores on Day 1. Jagga Jasoos has not been able to grow much from that, despite getting an edge of over 600 screens.

The start is definitely not bad as it was touted as the most unpredictable film, but the word of mouth is similar to Tubelight. There is still a dark cloud hovering around what will happen on Monday. With such a start, a strong hold on Monday is very necessary. If that doesn’t happen, film will be joining the list of flops.

There is some rejoice for the makers as the second day trends are coming from the morning shows. Jagga Jasoos has opened to 40% occupancy in the morning shows. When compared with the morning shows of Friday (20-25%) there is a jump of 75% which is huge. This sets it up for a double digit finish. However, the double digit finish will not be enough and it would need a 12-13 crore day in the worst case in order to have a chance on Sunday. Anything below 12 crores will not allow Jagga Jasoos to beat Barfi over the weekend (33.5 crores) and this is absolutely necessary. Let’s hope film finishes over 12 crores!

Day 1 – 8.5 crores

Day 2 – 40% Morning Occupancy
